"It still slightly galls me to this day," said the 48-year-old. "I was an extremely keen oarsman when I was at school, rowing regattas like Henley, and was unceremoniously dropped from the first eight.

"The Housemaster didn't bother telling me to my face, just pinned the team on the board. That was really it for me after that and I just became totally disincentivised and my academic work went out the window.
