Poor teaching can make the difference between a pass and a fail for thousands of GCSE pupils, according to a report released today.

Having an "excellent" teacher rather than a bad one can mean an increase of more than one GCSE grade per pupil and having a good teacher can be worth 0.6 of a grade, making the difference between a C and D grade for many young people, said the Institute for Public Policy Research.
