It is, perhaps, ironic that the chief architect of the decline in the numbers of pupils studying language in Birmingham was the city's former MP for Yardley, Estelle Morris.

It was Ms Morris who introduced reforms ending the mandatory requirement for youngsters to study at least one language at GCSE level.
