Summary


Normal life in Birmingham was put on ice for months during the winter of 1963, when the region was gripped by the "big freeze" - the coldest winter to hit the country since 1740.

The canals froze, the M6 was closed as snow piled up, and the Clent Hills, near Stourbridge, were turned into a ski slope for hundreds of Midlands residents. The sub-zero weather lasted from Boxing Day 1962 until well into February.
