Summary
Because the city is a man-made environment, those who grow up there believe that materials are given us to use. The idea that the natural world is an interdependent system, which depends on processes like the water cycle, is not self-evident to them as it was to Isaiah when he wrote: 'The rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return until they have watered the earth, giving seed to the sower and bread to eat.'
