Why so? Because this was a man who I believed to have written great music. How many opportunities are there to be in the same room with anyone of whom you could say that?

The occasion was in 1985, Tippett's 80th birthday year, at the Royal Academy of Music. Among the birthday celebrations was going to be a residency at the Malvern Festival where, in addition to performances of his music, he would judge a marmalademaking competition - marmalade apparently being one of his lesser-known enthusiasms.
