Dear Editor, In excusing the failure of Conservative MEPs to vote with mainstream parties and support the directive which seeks to protect EU citizens from discrimination, Malcolm Harbour raises an important point. (Letters 14/04/09) According to Mr Harbour the Conservatives are sticking to a point of principle, in that the directive "would reverse a basic tenant of British law: that the burden of proof should be on the plaintiff".

In order to remain consistent to their principles, they must disagree with the current UK laws based on the Race Directive and the Employment Framework Directive? If so, the Tories should come clean and say that they intend to rescind our UK equalities legislation.
