Trafalgar Celebrations: 'Nelson Would Be Amazed at Today's Royal Navy

Admiral Nelson would be proud of today's Royal Navy and its capability - even if Britannia no longer rule the waves, according to a leading navy expert.

Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of naval bible Jane's Fighting Ships, thinks that far from turning in his grave at the state of the navy, Nelson would be amazed by it if he was at tomorrow's fleet review. He also believes that given Britain's position in the world and the threats it faces, Nelson would agree with its present structure even in the face of cuts to the fleet. But Commodore Saunders said the Royal Navy needs more frigates and destroyers and that the 25 in service are not enough to do the job properly even though the senior service remains one of the world's largest forces afloat. He said.
