The star rating system for hotels in this country has always been shrouded in mystery, as far as I am concerned.

It is a very subjective system. One person's four star delight can literally be another's hotel from hell. Often, it appears, the ratings are applied for the tangible elements that we can all see - heated towel rails in the bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, a trouser press - and do not always take into account those parts of the experience that actually matter the most.
