The Palestinian government held back, at Britain's request, from raiding the hideout where kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston was being held, the prime minister said.

Ismail Haniyeh said negotiators had instead persuaded the captors, whom he indicated were Islamic extremists, to reduce their demands for the release of Johnston, 44, who was kidnapped on March 12 in Gaza City.
