A year ago the Footsie stood at under 5200. I don't recall anyone then suggesting that with a good wind and a bit of luck it could put on 1,000 points in the next 12 months. Nor did they set 6000 as a medium-term target - and those that tried might have been told off for over-cooking their own hype.

Still, there we were yesterday with the 100-share through 6200 and at a new five-year high.
