During his playing days, New Zealand legend Wayne Shelford had a reputation as an abrasive back-row forward hewn from rock with a silver fern running right through his mighty body.

Stories abound about how, in 1986 in only his second match for the Land of the Long White Cloud, Shelford was the subject of some over--zealous French rucking and found himself needing pitch--side surgery on his scrotum to ensure one of his testicles did not get kicked into touch.
