England have effectively resigned themselves to being without their World Cup matchwinner Jonny Wilkinson for the RBS 6 Nations Championship opener against Italy in Rome.

Fly-half Wilkinson has linked up with the England squad for a two- day training get-together in Surrey but national coach Sir Clive Woodward last night admitted his chances of regaining sifficient fitness to face Italy on February 15 were remote.
