Summary
The Ironbridge Gorge site can justifiably call itself the birthplace of heavy industry in not just this country but the world.
It was here that 18th century ironmasters began the mass production of iron which provided the foundations for the Industrial Revolution. This Shropshire valley was the catalyst for the British engineering industry and paved the way for the railway age next century.
