The chairman of Midland garden centre chain Wyevale won his battle with rebel shareholders yesterday and narrowly hung on to his job.

Activist investment group Laxey Partners had forced an extraordinary general meeting to decide the future of David Williams. Laxey, which owns 29 per cent of the Hereford company, wanted to replace Mr Williams with Robert Ware, the former deputy chief executive of property company MEPC.
