French legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent acknowledges applauses Canked by French actress Catherine Deneuve, right, and model Laetitia Casta after his farewell show in 2002 at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris Legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, who rewrote the rules of fashion by putting women into elegant trousersuits that came to define how modern females dressed, has died at the age of 71.

His long-time friend and former partner Pierre Berge made the announcement but did not give details other than to say the couturier died at his Paris home on Sunday following a long illness.
